Wick Communications

Time to win an award

In journalism on October 15, 2010 at 8:06 am

I have been terribly remiss in mentioning this, but the deadline is now fast approaching for the annual Suburban Newspapers of America editorial awards. You can read all about it here. The deadline for submitting entries is Oct. 22, 2010 — a week from today.

As you can see, the contest includes a ton of categories and circulation classes, so you won’t be competing against the Los Angeles Times or Huffington Post.

Because Wick Communications is a member organization, all of our papers qualify for reduced rates for entries. You pay $28 per entry, not the $56 charged non-members.

It’s easy to roll your eyes at journalism contests. It seems there are a bunch of them and every journalist you know can probably point to a couple of prizes from regional or statewide competitions. But it can be a very satisfying thing to be praised by peers. Lord knows we don’t get much of that from readers!

And this is an opportunity for national acclaim. The SNA counts 2,000 members and is one of the largest organizations of its kind. It would be good to win some of these. Let me know if you need some help.
