Reporting 101

In Writing on November 26, 2010 at 10:38 am

I love this site. It made me want to hug Jim Hall.

He put together his site as a project in grad school some time back and it’s as relevant now as it was then.

I am particularly taken by the seven qualities he notes in successful journalists. Here’s No. 4 on that list:

A good reporter is pleasant. She adopts a friendly nature with those she meets. She is a grateful guest, with a belief in the basic goodness of people. She conveys to those she meets that she is tolerant of them and their ideas, even though she does not like them or what they stand for. She subordinates her ego and is a good listener…

Amen, brother.

I also really like his emphasis on rewriting. As Hall says, “Remember, there is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting.” …

The site includes sound tips on how to structure your next news story and a list of resources that might be helpful.

The site is not the most advanced Internet portal I the land. It’s intended to convey the most basic skills. But sometimes those are all you need.
