A stunning presentation

In Online media on November 3, 2011 at 3:48 pm

I don’t know how I missed this in September, but it’s really incredible, isn’t it? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more ambitious online news presentation.

As you can see, The Reckoning is arranged around big issues related to 9/11 – the day itself, the decade that followed, the wars that ensued, treatment of Muslims and so on. There is so much obvious forethought that went into the project; there is no telling when the folks at the New York Times began thinking about how best to utilize the Web for the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

I recommend simply reading through it for the sheer inspiration of it all.

Beyond that, it is indicative of the types of things we can do with niche sites. You don’t need the resources of the New York Times to do something special. Have you seen Land and Livestock or Williston Wire? One is a Wick venture run through the Capital Journal in Pierre and designed to add depth to agricultural coverage in the state. The other is from the local economic development agency and advertised on the Williston Herald’s website. The Williston Wire  is clearly of interest to locals and claims to provide news you will find nowhere else. It adds value to the newspaper’s website. …

I love these out-of-the-box Web initiatives. They are limitless. You don’t need to be a traditional journalist to put one together. The ability to publish on the Internet means we are only limited by our imaginations.
