The best time to tweet

In Online media on 11 May 2012 at 8:20 am

The link shortener Bitly has gotten toward the bottom of a murky pond that has always interested me: Just when is the best time to use social media?

First, in case you don’t know a Bitly from a Tinyurl, both are tools used to shorten hyperlinks so they don’t look so crazy in print and don’t take up all 140 characters of your tweet. Bitly keeps track of when our readers click those little links and that has led it to some conclusions:

  • The optimal time to tweet is between 1 and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • The best time to use Facebook is between 1 and 4 p.m.
  • And the best time to post to Tumblr is in the evening.

Compiled into the chart above, you can see the times when your links are most likely to be clicked on Twitter indicated in darker blue.

So what? Should you hold your breaking news at 11 a.m. for two hours to hit that optimal window. I don’t think so. Should you retweet in that window? Well, maybe. It’s an idea. …

The best use of social media is an evolving art. We’ve been given tools before we truly know how best to use them. That is a little scary, but also exhilarating.
