The wide world of sports

Nogales International Sports Editor William Wilczewski has an interesting story on his watch and he thinks it may be of interest to sports editors throughout Arizona and beyond. In fact, he’s wondering if any of you have local athletes competing on an international level and whether you might cooperate on coverage.

Areana Villaescusa got him thinking about all this. She is a 15-year-old wrestling phenom from his neck of the woods. She has been invited to compete in the FILA Cadet Pan-American Championships in Venezuela, the Canada Cup in Toronto, and at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

William is researching the idea of traveling to one or more of the events to provide the kind of coverage readers in Nogales couldn’t get anywhere else. As William writes, “with event action, behind the scenes looks, history and travel guides that make (readers) feel like they just hopped a plane to another country themselves.”

It’s an ambitious idea. Whether that is financially feasible, I can’t say. But it might be under some circumstances. For instance: …

  • Find a sponsor. Maybe there is one local booster – a car dealer, a hotelier, a restaurant chain – willing to foot the bill to sponsor a special section that would profile the young athlete and provide the kind of travel pieces William envisions. How about the airline that she will be flying or the local travel agent who might see it as a way to reach other sports fans.
  • Share expenses. Does your newspaper have athletes who might be at the Olympic Training Center at the same time or perhaps entered in the same international events? It’s not out of the realm of possibility. If there were several athletes in the Wick readership all headed in the same place, it might be possible for several newspapers to pitch in for local coverage. A Wick sportswriter could provide tailored coverage for Nogales, Half Moon Bay and Montrose. If you are in one of our sports departments, please let William know if you have an athlete headed to the events described. You can reach him at sports@nogalesinternational.com.

In any event, good luck to Vallaescusa. I’m sure it’s a terrific honor to be asked to compete at that level.
