Last year’s winners included Shar Porier of the Sierra Vista Herald and Bisbee Daily Review, for an exhaustive look at the entire 51 miles of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. The Green Valley News was honored for consistently superior editorial pages. The Capital Journal in Pierre took top honors for a terrific special section honoring former Gov. Bill Janklow on the occasion of his death.
The winners of last year’s Wick Editorial Awards had one thing in common: They provided world-class coverage of the local people and events that together form the basis for community. The 2014 Wickies promise more of the same.
We’re announcing the new contest here today. You can read all the details here, but let’s go over the high points.
There are six categories: Enterprise, Feature or Sports, Editorial Comment, Community Pride, Breaking News – and new this year, Online Reporting.
Electronic entries: No more cutting and mailing. This year you send all your entries in a single email, assuming the file isn’t too big, to firstname.lastname@example.org. You’ll send pdfs, links and supporting documents all in an email.
Once again, Group Publisher David Lewis has agreed to help. He and I will serve as judges of the contest. If we can’t agree, we’ll gently tug in another group publisher for help.
The deadline is July 11. After today’s announcement, you’ll get one reminder about a week out. Everyone is expected to participate in all categories. No more than one entry per category, please. …
Winners will be announced around Aug. 1. They will be rolled out in a website and for the first time as part of a special publication.
